Congratulations! You’re engaged! This is such a fun-filled season in your life, so be sure to soak up everything you can. But what do you do now? Start planning a wedding – duh!
While this is a new and exciting time, it can also be stressful. You may now be wondering what vendors to book first, when you solidify a color palette, and how to organize/create a budget. You may feel overwhelmed, and have no idea where to start. If you’re detail-oriented, like me, you may already be looking at stationery, what blooms you definitely want to have in your bouquet, or what color napkins would compliment your bridesmaid’s dresses, but you gotta take a step back and look a the bigger picture. It is super important to get your basics solidified first.
1.Pick A Date + A Venue
Lots of vendors – including us – rely on our crazy calendars. The only way for us to know if we’re available for your wedding is to know when and where you’re getting married! We can’t help you out if we don’t have these details. Once you’ve signed the dotted line with your venue, you can then start reaching out to other vendors!
2. Book a Planner/Coordinator
Once you’ve booked your venue, it is vital that you book with a planner or a coordinator. While we always recommend having a wedding planner, a coordinator will still be able to make sure your day runs smoothly. You might think you can do everything on your own, but let these professionals will be able to help you along the way and make your wedding planning experience that much better. They’re here to help you!
3. Piece together a Budget
Excel became my best friend when planning my own wedding. For this blog post, we will stick strictly to your floral budget.
- Florals have increased drastically in price over the last couple of years. A rose that cost $1.35/stem last year now costs upwards of $3.50/stem. That being said, weddings that could be designed for $3,000 a couple of years back is now going to cost you upwards of $3,750 or even $4,000.
- Being transparent with your florist about your must-haves vs. wants is very important. Letting your florist know if you are firm with your budget or if you have some wiggle room is also an important detail to disclose. Knowing this information, we will work with your budget accordingly – choosing certain blooms, centerpieces, installations, etc.

1. Pick your color palette
There are so many different color palettes to choose from! Everything – decor, linens, bridesmaids’ dresses, makeup – all relies on your color palette. We think it’s super important to keep everything uniform when it comes to your wedding day, and that all relates back to your color palette. Having an idea of what colors you want for your wedding before filling our your questionnaire will help us tremendously. Your color palette determines what blooms we will choose for you!
2. Inspiration Photos
Whether this means a Pinterest board or your wedding planner has created a design board based on your previous conversations, it is so important to have photos to give us. We’ve seen Pinterest boards with 10 different folders composed of 50 pins each, and we’ve seen Pinterest boards with 5 inspiration photos. There is no right or wrong! As long as we have a visual to go off of, we can take it from there!
My Personal Planning Experience
Not too long ago, I was in your shoes! Excited, overwhelmed, egear – I was feeling all the things! My now husband, Blake, had proposed in The Tetons, and we just decided we would be having a small, intimate wedding in New Braunfels at my aunt + uncle’s house.
We solidified our date + our venue, and I had finally locked down a color palette – all neutrals. Taupes, browns, blacks, grey, and creams. It was time to get started on my Pinterest board for floral inspiration, but being in the industry, I had absolutely no idea what I wanted for my florals. I would change my mind every.single.wedding I worked.
If you didn’t know, I used to work for Urban Rubbish Floristry in College Station while I was in school at Texas A&M. Jaelynn + The Urban Rubbish team are truly my second family, and I wouldn’t be where I am today without them. I gave Jaelynn 100% control when it came to our wedding florals. Told her my color palette and let her run with it! Sometimes, trusting your florist with your vision is the absolute best thing you can do.
Trusting my vendors was the best thing I could have done! Our wedding was so special and I wouldn’t have changed one single thing. If you are on the fence about something pertaining to creativity in your wedding, let your vendors do their thing. They will do what they know best, and you won’t be disappointed.
